Tell me about yourself: answer for B.Tech ECE fresher

ECE students face a tricky first question: do you want core electronics, embedded or IT? Interviewers listen for the path you have chosen and a circuit or board you have actually built.

Sample from Sneha, a final-year B.Tech ECE student from Nagpur, in a campus interview

About 1 min 5 sec 154 words

  1. Presentwho I am now

Hello, ma'am. My name is Sneha, and I'm finishing my B.Tech in Electronics and Communication at an engineering college in Nagpur. I like the hands-on side of the branch, mainly microcontrollers and embedded C.

  2. Pastwhat I have done

For my final-year project, I built a soil-moisture controller for my uncle's farm using an Arduino and a small relay board. It switches the pump on only when the soil is dry. He says his water use has dropped by about a third. I also learnt to trace a noisy sensor signal on an oscilloscope in our lab, which was frustrating at first and very satisfying in the end.

  3. Futurewhy this role

That's why this embedded role interests me. I want to work on real hardware, test it carefully and learn how a product travels from the bench to the shop floor. I'm ready to start on the test bench, and I can relocate to any city where your hardware team is based.

Short version

Three sentences, for when you're nervous.

I'm Sneha, a final-year B.Tech ECE student from Nagpur. I built an Arduino soil-moisture controller that saves water on my uncle's farm. I'd like to begin my career as an embedded engineer.

3 things to include

  • The path you chose

Say embedded, VLSI or testing early. A panel with several branches in the room needs to know where you fit.

  • A board you built

Describe one device, what it senses and what it controls. A real build gives the interviewer an easy next question.

  • A tool you used

Name an oscilloscope, Proteus or Vivado, whichever you actually touched. It proves you went beyond theory.

2 things to avoid

  • Every subject you studied

Signals, control systems and antennas in one breath sounds like a syllabus. Choose the two that match this job.

  • 'I can do anything'

Core and IT recruiters both want focus. Claiming you are open to all roles makes you sound unsure of yours.
