Tell me about yourself: answer for software engineer
When a software engineer switches jobs, interviewers listen for ownership: what you built, what changed because of it and why you are leaving a stable role. A short, specific answer with one number does more than a tour of your whole resume.

Sample from Nikhil, a software engineer with 3 years in logistics software, based in Gurugram, in a job switch interview
About 1 min 5 sec 153 words
Presentwho I am now
Thank you for having me. I'm Nikhil Verma, a software engineer with three years of experience at a logistics software company in Gurugram. I mostly work on Node.js and TypeScript services and on the PostgreSQL databases behind them.
Pastwhat I have done
Last year, I took charge of the route-planning API that dispatchers use every morning. It was slow, so I profiled the queries, added caching for the common routes and rewrote one heavy function. The planning time for a large fleet dropped from about ten minutes to under seven. The dispatchers noticed before my manager did, which was the best part.
Futurewhy this role
Now I want to work on a product that serves more customers, with a team that cares about engineering practice. Your platform team is doing that, and I believe I can contribute from the first month. My notice period is thirty days, and I can speak to my manager about an earlier release if needed.
Short version
Three sentences, for when you're nervous.
I'm Nikhil, a software engineer with three years in logistics software, mostly Node.js and TypeScript. I sped up our route-planning API by about thirty percent. I'd like to move to a product company with a bigger engineering team.
3 things to include
Ownership
Say 'I took charge of' or 'I rewrote', not 'we were part of'. Interviewers want your own contribution.
One number
Ten minutes down to seven is easy to repeat and easy to test in follow-up questions.
Why now
A calm reason for moving, like wanting a larger product, avoids the awkward 'why are you leaving' question later.
2 things to avoid
Complaints about your employer
Even true complaints about management or pay make an interviewer wonder how you will speak about them.
A tour of every project
Three projects in ninety seconds is a blur. Tell one project well.
